Renowned Austrian sound engineer and producer Dietz Tinhof approached Pro Performance with a specific problem. His mixing room was acoustically almost perfect, but bass became an issue because his listening position was different to originally planned. We would expect most listeners would not notice these subtle differences, but for someone who has worked with the likes of Falco and Hans Zimmer, Conchita Wurst to Opus, we are hardly surprised.
We see it as a great compliment to the quality of PSI Audio products that such an audio heavy-weight can be so complimentary of the AVAA's.
In our eyes, good acoustics enable good music production. Dietz Tinhof required a solution for excess resonance in his studio and together with the C214 from PSI Audio we were able to find one.
This space was originally conceived as a 3D audio laboratory for super-critical monitoring during the development of audio software and sample libraries for the VSL (Vienna Symphonic Library). It’s a sealed room-in-room, a self-supporting, fully decoupled construction with a remarkably balanced acoustic interior. However, during the pandemic, the requirements shifted into those of a full-fledged 3D music-mixing environment. The listening position had to be moved away from the planned ideal position for practical reasons, resulting in an inevitable unevenness below 120 Hz in the Sweet Spot.
We used 3x PSI AVAA C214 digital active bass traps and combined this with our custom-built acrylic/diffusion window to control the space and reshape the acoustics significantly, particularly in the bass frequencies.
“I like to describe the AVAAs as “virtual holes in the wall”, which means that they are incredibly efficient acoustically, while remaining completely “out of the way” in terms of the audio signal,” Dietz says.
Just as important as good acoustics is natural light which is why we chose to include a diffusion window in the solution. This does not block out the light like an absorber would and aside from being effective is rather eye-catching.
“Most certainly my most rewarding investments in studio equipment in recent times”, states Dietz, who has mixed #1 albums, movie scores and all kinds of contemporary music here, in stereo as well as in 3D audio.
